Public bug reported: I have recently aquired a new Netgear WN111v2 wireless adapter which along with a whole range of newer usb adapters is supported by the ar9170 driver in the new 2.6.30 kernel which Ubuntu Karmic uses. However it does not work out of the box as the open source/freely distibutable firmware files are not yet included.
I have tested the files ar9170-1.fw and ar9170-2.fw and they work well, making the device appear network manager and connect to my home network (WPA2 Personal). It should not be a simple matter of including them in the default install or via restricted drivers (if there are any license issues I have not seen). more info can be found at: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ar9170 but downloads of the firmware files via gitweb are currently broken due to an encoding bug: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/1040449 https://lists.madwifi-project.org/pipermail/otus-devel/2009-January/000172.html The files are included in the linux firmware tree and can be downloaded via: git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git it is a good idea to check the md5sum's: cd linux-wireless md5sum ar* bebf8de7bf0aa8ae3eb395cc6be2e762 ar9170-1.fw 33ae4899340c75be4bc80c34fbe5d171 ar9170-2.fw and they can be install via: sudo cp ar* /lib/firmware (supported devices should now function automatically as expected) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: ar9170 drivers karmic wireless -- ar9170 wireless firmware needed in Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386403 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
