for me this is as simple as 1. place the draged icon where it was dropped 2. if there is already one or more icons that ocupy the space that will be required by the dragged icon, make space on the surrounding of the final dragged file (moving all the icons on the area if required) to acomodate the overlaping icons on the surrounding of the dragged icon.
