Good news! I have the proposed repository enabled and just installed the 2.6.28-13-generic kernel, and it shows all my sound cards as being detected! I'm not in front of the machine so I can't actually check the speakers, but everything looks on the up and up from remotely here. I'll post if it really does work:
Linux Wakko 2.6.28-13-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:55:09 UTC 2009 x86_64 ... m...@wakko:~$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 2: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Being that 2.6.29 and 2.6.30 didn't work from the Karmic packages, it may just be a kernel configuration issue. Hope that helps someone who has been having the same problems.
