Just a quick note: I havent experienced this problem in a long time with 8510p nor 8710w after installing the latest beta ATI and NVIDIA drivers (via kanotix scripts). With those versions present in the repository I had constant problems. I haven't used them since so I'm unable to confirm whether a possible newer version might have obsoleted this bug report.
