I have not tried. I went instead to Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix  with its 
0.7 network manager and my modem worked out the box and more reliably 
than 8.04/PPA. The modem worked out of the box with 9.04 NBR and in a 
few seconds. Plug in - choose provider 3 and its working!

I have no reason to stick to 8.04 so I think I'll stick with 9.04 NBR
