I tried to install the proposed linux image and all other packages as well: 
still NO GOOD NEWS. Problem still present (no responsive brightness, only 
applet).

brightness, actual_brightness, etc have 9 value by default....
If i do
echo 4 > brightness
laptop brightness isn't affected, brightness file changes to 4, but 
actual_brightness file keeps 9 value.
