You do not have to compile source, at least on i386 and AMD64 since there is pre-built Linux binaries. However, manual unzipping to home directory is not a great way to install applications on Linux (and updates will not be tracked by package manager, etc). Proper way is to install application is package manager. That's where it fails because of ancient version which is NOT SUPPORTED by upstream anymore...
