I got the same problem on my DELL 1501 laptop computer.
and solved the this issue by the method mentioned above:
1 ) I changed the kernel boot options by removing "quiet splash" and
adding "debug break=mount".
2) Once the busy box prompt appeared, unplugged the USB drive.
3) I then plugged the USB drive back in, and it was recognized. then
exit the busybox.
