Public bug reported:

When i boot-up for the first time there is no login sound and no sound
system-wide. If i click on a music file to test i can see it playing and
vizualization indicating the motion of sound waves - but no sound.

Yet, when i Ctr.+Alt+Backspace and thereby restart X i arrive at the
login page with the usual drum roll; and upon re-entry into my system
have system-wide sound?!

During the installation of Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope i checked (or
unchecked ?) to by-pass the login/password page/prompt and wonder
whether that could point to an explanation. I will re-enable
login/password page to check out that theory. Obviously, it's annoying
and ironic that in attempting to save time by avoiding the login page I
invariably have to go through the further process of ctrl.+alt+backspace
after boot-up in order to get a working system which totally defeats the
purpose.

Puse Audio seems to be running: <ps aux | grep> pulseaudio reveals:

I hope this feedback is of help
