Thanks for responding. As shown in the "Rectangular area" mockup, I think the area should be a rectangle with the max horizontal length and max vertical height as its dimensions. Your concern about where the area begins and ends is valid for your situation, although your icon arrangement is uncommon. I don't think the bigger area is confusing at all. In fact, the current way is more confusing because practically all other parts of gnome use rectangular clickable areas. The nautilus content icons are an exception.
