Same problem, solved adding this line at the end of 
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba

$ uname -a
Linux --- 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 
GNU/Linux

$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
