Dont think this is fixed properly: I am still having this problem on 9.04 for upgraded and new installation.
On my upgraded amd64 I have libpam-smbpass installed and it is the lastest version. On my new install 32bit laptop I dont have libpam-smbpass installed and there are no entries for pam_smbpass.so in common-auth (auth optional pam_smbpass.so migrate) and no entries in common-password(password optional pam_smbpass.so nullok use_authtok use_first_pass).
