My most humble apologies. The problem is NOT specific to gnome- screensaver. XScreensaver exhibits the same problem -- it just took a little longer.
"Blank Screen" still works. Bouncing Cow appears to work on a short trial -- I'll leave it overnight to see if I can get it to fail as well. At the moment, however, it seems that there is perhaps something wrong with blinkbox for Jaunty 64bit.
