The following has worked for me: 1. install 2.6.30rc6 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.30-rc6/ in jaunty 2. reboot, gnome starts up 3. insert ZTE MF636 USB modem 4. wait icon to appear on desktop then "Eject volume" 5. wait around 30s for Network Manager to show device in its devices list 6. Now just create a Mobile connection and connect
