Note to devs: I suggested Gareth open this report and direct it to gnome-power-manager based on comments he'd added to another report (bug #76557).
Based on observations made in that report, it would appear that ACPI does work on this machine, but that gnome-power-manager is either not respecting his settings or is unable to enforce them.
