Hi, I couldn't tell if the crash behavior I had is due to the same bug, but it sound very similar, and related bug reports are marked as duplicate of this one.
It appeared after I upgraded from ubuntu 8.04 to 9.04 (short step at 8.10). 1. Launching Umbrello from the menu or the command line, it opened fine, loaded the last project. But as soon as I asked to create a new project, from menu or tool icon, it crashed, with that SIGSEGV error, opening the kde crash handler This, every time I tried. 2. I created a new diagram in the old project, and followed the steps mentionned at the top of this report, Umbrello crashed the same way. 3. Workaround ? I launched umbrello from the command line with a non existing filename as argument. It complained about that but I had a clean project to work with. I could even create a new project from there, and when I tried again the steps to reproduce the bug (create 2 classes...), it didn't crash :) 4. Reloading the problematic project. I reloaded several old projects, created new projects from there, without problem, except when I reloaded the first one (crashing again). I attach it (backup.xmi , gzipped) To users experiencing problems with umbrello, I would recommend to disable the "autosave" and "reload last project" options.
