2.7.1 fixed alot of "random freezes" of which there doesn't seem to be a single 
reason behind, I'm sorry it didn't fix yours. Have you tried upgrading your 
kernel to see if the results differ? Alot of the X intel fixes are happening in 
the kernel space now unfortunately which is not so easy to fix for older 
releases. I recommend trying 2.6.30-rc6 (aka what should be 2.6.30-6.7 for 
karmic which should be released any time now) along with the xorg-edgers 
packages on jaunty when it is released to see if there is any change. rc6 
specifically because there were some significant changes since rc5 which fix 
random crashes on i965 hardware such as -
  drm/i915: Don't allow binding objects into the last page of the aperture

That is just from closing glxgears most likely.
