I found the same problem trying to install Java from Firefox as well. In fact, there was no sun-java6-jre or anything related to it. The only java related thing listed in Synaptic was icedtea and it wouldn't install because it couldn't find a dependency package. After finding this, I figured there was something wrong with the repository server I was using. My selected repository server was the server for the United States. I changed it to the MIT server and all of these problems disappeared, so I think there's something wrong with the US repository server.
