Does the maintainer need to be updated for -XbuildY? As far as I know we only need to update the maintainer if we did changes to the package, so it's correct that update-maintainer only updates the maintainer field for -XubuntuY. As a fakesync is just a different .orig.tar.gz (different md5sum) but with no ubuntu changes, we don't need to update the maintainer field. After this change update-maintainer will also change the maintainer field for mere rebuilds. Which is not a problem in itself, but also not really necessary.
