Newbie here.  Just wanted to report that installing the deb pkg fixed
the menu problem on my eee 1000, too.  I also had the problem afterwards
of the desktop not displaying icons, not allowing you to save on it,
etc, but the gconftool-2 --set
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components_list --type list --list-
type=string ["windowmanager","panel","filemanager"] command fixed that
up. Thanks to all who helped!  I thought I was doomed to using the
Netbook Desktop mode forever...
