very similar here, with nvidia: had loads of problems with the 180 drivers. removing proprietary drivers worked well - no crashes at all - but of course, no compiz niceness. now trying the nvidia 173 driver. no problems as of yet (> 1h).
To downgrade the nvidia drivers go to System | Administration | Hardware Drivers and: - disable version 180 (I actually restarted the PC to ensure the drivers were really gone) - enable version 173 (again, a reboot was required).
