Pedro, Thanks for the reply, I don't think the problem is reproducible. After sending the bug report, I changed my email password on gmail, deleted all account details from Evolution and then re-entered them. Evolution now sends my emails, but reports that I have no new mail, even when there is new mail, but nothing hangs.
Thinking about this I suspect I had conflicts in the settings for Evolution and Gmail, which was producing the lockup. I am now going to go through the manuals with a fine tooth comb to see if I can work out how to configure everything correctly.
