I am having the same problem - Ubuntu 8.10 and have turned off the assistive technologies.
This seems a serious shortcoming quite beyond me to do anything about other than comment that it should be fixed to preserve OO/Ubuntu credibility. Not a very helpful remark, I know, but I can't think of anything else to say.
