I appreciate the effort, but if I'm following correctly I don't believe 
this will work.  I went through recompiling the kernel with the option 
and creating a package much like what I see there.  However, this then 
lacks the associated restricted modules package for the nvidia driver 
and atheros wireless.  In looking into recompiling those packages hit a 
number of stumbling blocks which eventually led me to filing the request 
for this to be enabled in the existing package alongside the other 
ftrace options.

Without the associated restricted modules the trace isn't much of an 
apples to apples comparison and likely the issue would not be able to be 
reproduced as it only seems to occur when the wireless is in use.

On an up note, the mysterious lockups that have plagued my laptop since 
upgrading to Intrepid haven't happened in almost a week, possibly two.
