I have this same issue in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04). I tried running firefox in safe-mode, and still get the issue.
If I go to a page with more than just plain-text and scroll rapidly, I can reproduce. For example, if I go to my twitter home page and then use my touchpad to scroll up and down quickly, the system hard freezes. Mouse is still active, but I cannot perform any actions on screen. Ctrl+Alt+Bkspace has no response (I disabled dontzap). I can either power down my laptop, or use alt+sysrq+k / alt+sysrq + r-e-i-s-u-b to restart. I have a Dell Laptop (630m) which has an integrated video card. I do use compiz with some effects turned on. I also tried using the 2.6.30-020630rc4 kernel to fix some video performance issues. Any ideas? I'm new to linux and am really liking Ubuntu - don't want these crashes to be such a deterrent.
