I have this problem with Jaunty. I have kde4 session, and I have a freshly installed kdm. I get the blank screen when I logout - the only way to recover this is with ssh from another machine and then restarting kdm. If I uninstall kdm and install gdm it works fine
I had been running a bug fix of the xorg intel driver and and in case it was that I downgraded to the standard one, but that didn't change anything.
