I'm having this same issue as well. I tried removing .mozilla-profile and it didn't help.
Similar to (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/220045) If I click the expand-o-tron button above the message it refreshes and i can read the message, however if I then switch to another email the message doesn't update.
