I have investigated this and the crashing line appears to be pure
nonsense.  It makes invalid assumptions about the in-memory
representation and anyway the semantics it appears to be trying to
implement would be wrong.  gs-gpl does not have it.

I'm doing a test build with the erroneous test removed and expect to
upload a fix today.
