Dear Kees Thank you for your reply. The error message I get, Is when I am using automatic update. The packages are downloaded and then I get the following error message. E: Problem parsing dependency Depends E: Error occurred while processing libgnomekbd2 (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. The version I am using is version 8.4 the hardy heron. I have only recently started using Ubuntu and I am not quite ok with the commands.
