I have encountered the same problem on a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT796HP today. Hardy has no problems at all, Intrepid and Jaunty wont run properly unless a key is held down.
I believe this is a problem caused by ACPI/DSDT.aml Hardy tries to load DSDT.aml from initramfs but fails. Intrepid and Jaunty succeed in finding DSDT.aml in initramfs, but it seems to be broken.
