Same problem here with jaunty amd_64. As a workaround here works this: "edit" -> "configure notecase" -> "global" -> deselect "use system language settings" and select your language from "language" menu; restart. (it's the "opposite" of what's suggested here: http://www.puppylinux.com/blog/?viewDetailed=00659)
