** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

Whether I upgrade from Intrepid, or perform a fresh install from a
Jaunty CD, Xubuntu starts in a screen mode of 1280x960 pixels, which is
not practical on my 24cm / 16" CRT display. I'm not sure whether this
assumption is based on information X.org gets from the monitor via DDC
pins. I have to manually reset the display mode to 1024x768 (80 DPI)
  every time I boot Xubuntu.
