libxine1-ffmpeg was the missing piece. Shouldn't that be a dependency, then? I can't imagine it's very useful to ship Amarok unable to play MP3s by default. If it's a patent issue, maybe there should be some sort of warning dialog on startup, or you might see a lot of bug reports...
