I just had the same problem with my fresh installation of Ubuntu-9.04. I accidentally noticed that my eth0 was changed to eth1. This made all my single user license dependable softwares not to work.
However now I have managed to rectify it. I removed the physical network connection and then rebooted and now it shows as eth0.
