Aya makes a good point, and a great suggestion, thanks aya.

However, many of you reporting this but may not be familiar with 
getting/installing a mainline
kernel, so if you aren't then I would suggest you try the Ubuntu proposed 
kernel which is
2.6.28-12.43. That kernel cured  the problem for some others reporting a 
similar bug.

To get the proposed kernel use synaptic  and to go
Settings ->Repositories -> Updates, check proposed-jaunty, close
then from from Edit menu select Redo,  New Repository should
appear in left window, Select New Repository, and in right window
select Image file, apply, and the new image and initrd will install
and you can alter your /boot/grub/menu.lst to boot the  12.43 kernel
and see if the problem subsides.

If you know how to add jaunty-proposed to your apt sources.list then
do so and you can use  apt-get to install the 12.43 image file.
