Ok, it seems that knetworkmanager is no longer used with KDE 4.2 (though I already upgraded to 4.2 on intrepid using backports and it worked there). There is a new program nm-system-settings, called "Network Management" widget at KDE. Add this to your control bar. This seems to work fine, though its a completely different new tool (must configure everything again...)
