Yes, I did turn on the printer before booting. I did this explicitly, knowing that it might make a difference.
As I said in the main bug text, I had already set up this printer, using the same cable, for Intrepid Ibex and had no problems at all (I was impressed how easy it was!). When I cleanly installed Jaunty Jackalope over Intrepid Ibex, I could no longer set up the printer.
