Hello Brian. There are two different issues you are reporting: 1. "Installed a vanilla jaunty, evolution freezes and crashes like hell."
2. "Being pidgin connected to it through evolution integration plugin, it freezes too." Let's keep this bug with the first one. The second is a known issue (see bug 235250 for the base bug, and bug 371281 for my comments).
