I think this really is a bug with Jaunty. I notice other users are have the
same; and similar issues after "upgrading". I have tried re-installing all the
codecs, the player software, and tried all the suggestions on the Medibuntu
worksheet. The only way to get video to play is to open multiple players, and
this only works sometimes.
Here's the only way to get video or dvds to play:
1. open a video file using xine. you will have audio only. while file #1 is
running open a video file or dvd with VLC , Mplayer, or totem. Video #2 will
now play with audio and video. You can close video file #1 and #2 will stay
open. Sometimes this works. Simply trying to open a file normally results in
either a blank player, audio only or a few frames and the player crashes.
Seeing as how the videos will play using the play window of several
editing packages, I think that the issue is with how Jaunty handles the
player packages. The files and codecs are definitely there, Jaunty just
doesn't find them.
