** Description changed:

On two separate Ubuntu 8.04 systems the same problem occured (and a similar
problem also happened on a recent openSUSE 11.1 installation) presumably after
an automatic update since both systems were running fine for over a year.
When clicking the logout button on the pannel the GNOME desktop freezes and I
cannot click any button or menu.
The logout screen does not appear.
A ctrl+alt+backspace works and I can login again and start working but as
soon as the power button is clicked again the system freezes again.

+ UPDATE: Problem solved! Turned gnome-power-manager on in gnome session
+ manager (was off for some reason) and the problem disappears. It remains
+ on the openSUSE machine however but this looks like an unrelated problem
+ which just happens to show the same symptoms.
+
  Kind regards,

  Pim Schellart
