Same issue here. Could it be that this is xorg- or ati-related?
Installing fglrx using "hardware drivers" makes my laptop crash, and the
fan is continuously blowing hot air. Powertop doesn't reveal anything
out of the ordinary, the CPU is running idle 99.8% of the time.

The default radeon driver as well as fglrx worked fine with Ubuntu 8.10
on this system, without running hot at all.
