I have a similar issue on samsung r70 laptop [Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)], that after the "shut down" button is pressed, everything seems to work correctly (short kernel messages with....[ok] at the end of the line; ubuntu logo appears;), but then laptop just hangs, that power and wirelesslan led's are on, and the wild colors do appear on the screen...
