I had the same exact bug on a partial upgrade to jaunty from intrepid. Sound was crashing when I had it on auto or alsa. After upgrading the following packages, I got sound back in pidgin and it stopped crashing on IM receive: The following packages will be upgraded: alsa-base alsa-oss alsa-utils esound-common gnome-alsamixer gstreamer0.10-alsa libesd-alsa0 libesd0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 libgstreamer0.10-0 libsdl1.2-dev libsdl1.2debian libsdl1.2debian-alsa
