As requested in steps on https:/wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingHal  - here is
the required information.

Steps taken
  1  Plugged in phone using USB cable supplied with phone (Sony Ericsson V640i) 
to my laptop (IBM T30)
  2  Phone displays an options menu - USB modes.
  3  Options are  1-Phone mode  2-Media transfer  3-Print  4-Mass storage
  4  I chose 4-Mass storage as I think this is the 'most compatible'

  5 The new device notifier (KDE) informs me that there is a phone and
phone card option. (this is the first time the device notifier has
informed me that the phone is connected - previously it would not
display anything.

  6  I use dolphin to view the phone and or the card.
  7  Error - org.desktop.dbus.error.Noreply

  2 /var/log/kern.log
  3 /tmp/lshal.txt

If there is anything further I can do, I would be pleased to do it to
help resolve this issue.
