I got the same problem, but I have a clean install of Ubuntu 9.04 64 bits. My system is in Brazillian Portuguese (pt_BR), and on an ext4 filesystem.
The error message (in portuguese) translate to something like: "update-alternatives: error or end of file reading /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/HtmlConverter for update_mode".
