Rhythmbox uses GStreamer, I assume this is how it handles m4a, but GStreamer's API is very complicated and I can't re-implement all of the MP4 code in gtkpod to use it. In the devel list there have been talks about making the mpeg4ip discovery dynamic, to avoid two packages.
