i have interesting news: i reinstalled my system to a full xubuntu install, and the bug is gone. mplayer and totem gives xv output without any problems at 16 bits. the xorg.conf is the same that was on the previous isntall. (it was a vanilla xfce desktop on a cli ubuntu) i have no idea what can be in the background
