I'm using Jaunty 9.04 32-bit and found a solution that worked for me where all others failed. I followed the instructions in this thread - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130384 - to set up PulseAudio, and while playing a Flash video in Firefox, was able to switch the stream with Pulse to the correct output device (in my case, USB audio, which wasn't selected). I had to do the same thing with VLC player.
