No, it's your option, rather.

Many users are able, and choose to, run the kvm module provided by the
Ubuntu kernel, which consists of slightly older, more thoroughly
tested code.

The kvm-source package provides the source code to a newer kvm module
that provides some new features and bug fixes, but is perhaps less
well tested than the one already in the kernel.

It is up to you to decide which one you want to run.
