No, it's your option, rather. Many users are able, and choose to, run the kvm module provided by the Ubuntu kernel, which consists of slightly older, more thoroughly tested code.
The kvm-source package provides the source code to a newer kvm module that provides some new features and bug fixes, but is perhaps less well tested than the one already in the kernel.
