I have had this problem since installing 8.10
I have now updated to Jaunty (25/4/09) but I still have no sound.
I noticed when I restarted that NO SOUND CARD DETECTED flashed briefly up.
My sound card is a REALTEC ALC25B.
Now I have a speaker icon on the tool-bar with no cross and sound bars and I
can open the volume control and sound preferences and it looks like sound is
playing but no sound is audible.
Device Manager gives message HDA Intel Sound CardC0
ALSA Playback gives HDA Intel ALC883 Analog Device File /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
Sound Card HDA Intel. Sound Device. ALC268 Digital. Device File
/dev/snd/pcmC0D1p
Sound Card ALC268 Analog. Sound Device ALC268 Analog. Device File
/dev/snd/pcmC0D5p
